What Does An EKG Technician Do?

EKG technicians support doctors and other health professionals by performing cardiovascular tests, working with patients, and monitoring equipment. Ideal candidates for this online program have excellent interpersonal skills, are detail oriented, possess a caring and compassionate personality, and are interested in learning about high-tech mechanical equipment. 

 

Students who complete the EKG Technician program will be comfortable with medical terminology, disease processes, and patient best practices. They will also be prepared for a wide array of tasks, including identifying heart conditions, collecting data, assisting cardiologists, and providing professional patient care.

Where do they work?

EKG technicians work in a variety of settings, which may include hospitals, heart centers, or private practice offices. Technicians will collaborate with many other healthcare professionals, and there are opportunities to further specialize in other areas such as echocardiography, vascular technology, and Holter monitoring.

Clinical Requirement

A clinical component for this program is required. Students enrolled in this program will complete their clinical requirements at a site coordinated by Harrisburg University. If you have any questions about the clinical requirements of this program, please discuss them with your Training Specialist.

Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to sit for the Certified EKG Technician exam. Before taking this exam, students are required to complete at least 10 EKG’s on a live person in order to fulfill their clinical requirement.

EKG Technician Enrollment

  1. Students who wish to enroll in an online certificate program must connect first with their school's guidance counselor to get approval. Please contact Mrs. Miller at 717.506.3401 or admiller@cvschools.org to get started.
  2. Students must then receive parent consent via a signed copy of the Guardian Consent Form prior to enrolling in a program (available through the guidance office).
  3. The students' guidance counselor will work directly with Harrisburg University to enroll them for the program.
  4. Emerge Prepared programs are fully funded through a generous educational fund so no payment is collected from the student. 
  5. Upon enrolling, students will be paired with a Student Success Advisor who will act as a coach and mentor throughout the program. 

If students need additional funding source, we offer many convenient options.

Note: Some programs require a clinical component beyond the online coursework which extends the program length.

EKG technicians work hard, both physically and mentally, to help care for patients. They spend the majority of their shift standing, walking, kneeling and lifting.
